Do spiders sometimes cause you to react with dismay and revulsion?

can Shelob, in the mountains of Mordor and her children in Mirkwood still induce a good shudder?

and the movie Arachnophobia... does it give you nightmares?

well... here's an interesting discovery in Texas.

they say it might've been the heavy rains that contributed to the creation of this SEVERAL ACRE WEB:

Got Arachnophobia? Here’s Your Worst Nightmare

By GRETEL C. KOVACH - Published: August 31, 2007 - New York Times

WILLS POINT, Tex., Aug. 29 — Most spiders are solitary creatures. So the discovery of a vast web crawling with millions of spiders that is spreading across several acres of a North Texas park is causing a stir among scientists, and park visitors.

Sheets of web have encased several mature oak trees and are thick enough in places to block out the sun along a nature trail at Lake Tawakoni State Park, near this town about 50 miles east of Dallas.

The gossamer strands, slowly overtaking a lakefront peninsula, emit a fetid odor, perhaps from the dead insects entwined in the silk. The web whines with the sound of countless mosquitoes and flies trapped in its folds.

Allen Dean, a spider expert at Texas A&M University, has seen a lot of webs, but even he described this one as “rather spooky, kind of like Halloween.”

Mr. Dean and several other scientists said they had never seen a web of this size outside of the tropics, where the relatively few species of “social” spiders that build communal webs are most active.

Shelob was a demonic spirit in spider form, living high in the mountains of Mordor, the last child of Ungoliant to trouble the unhappy world.

She served none but herself, drinking the blood of Elves and Men, bloated and grown fat with endless brooding on her feasts, weaving webs of shadow; for all living things were her food, and her vomit darkness.

most interesting... I read that the webbery was originally white.

it turned BROWN after snaring millions of mosquitos!

that's totally awesome, considering I have to run the gauntlet of CLOUDS of mozzies, when traipsing over to the Duck House to feed my 24 new ducklings, and their proud triumvirate of mothers....

that's why I want to borrow a few of those spiveys!

That makes me think what happened? Isn't there always a bigger, stronger predator that eats one weaker and smaller, preventing it from gaining a total advantage over the environment?

I spied a spider
Up a tree.
Now I'm glad
That fly's not me!

During the WAR (a silver bullet to the first one who says,"What war was that, old man?") we had to learn a peculiar song I never understood till now, while we waited submissively for handouts of chewing gum and malted-milk tablets. Nobody gave us the written words, but we copied the guy in uniform who stood at the front of the class trying to look interested, and it went something like this: Some of the words we already knew from cinema newsreels.

Horror, horror,
We'll raise the chew-Billy,
Horror, horror,
The Oflag Maks u frei
So we sang the chorus
From Atlanta too you see
While we were munching through Georgia
